It looked as if the boys in black may take care the Hurricanes early but Carolina goalie Cam Ward shut the door after Evgeni Malkin opened up the scoring on the Penguins first powerplay opportunity. The Hurricanes tied things up with a powerplay goal of their own in the first and got the go ahead from Eric Staal after Ryan Whitney was tripped up behind the net putting him out of position. I can't say the Pens lost this one it just looked as if the Hurricanes wanted this win more, they opened fire on Fleury in the second period which allowed for the go ahead goal.
The first period was all offense and little to no defense, except what came from the goaltenders in each end. The Penguins got the first goal with "Shades of Mario" from Geno on the PowerPlay 2 minutes into the contest. The Penguins had another chance on a 2-1 with Malkin and Cooke but Cookies shot deflected off the side of the net. Shortly there after the Cookie Monster ran interference and went to the box, setting up a Hurricane PP and allowing them to climb back into the game. Period over tie ball game 1-1.
The Hurricanes jumped ahead in this game at about the half way point in this period when Justin Williams found Eric Staal uncovered in front of the net which allowed him to deflect one to the blocker side of Fleury and give the Canes a 2-1 lead and essentially the game winning goal.
The third period was a defensive stand still with neither team getting past either goaltender to light the lamp. The Penguins had a great scoring oppurtunity at the end of regulation with a 4 minute PP which came up empty on a ton of spectacular saves by Cam Ward.
If not for Cam Ward the Carolina Hurricanes could have easily been blown out in this game or vice versa for the Penguins both Goaltenders made the majority of the team's defensive plays on the night with highlight reel save after save.
